Dr. Robert Keynton serves as the Interim Executive Vice President for Research and Innovation at the University of Louisville. He has been with UofL for nearly two decades as a researcher, educator, entrepreneur and innovation leader.

Dr. Keynton earned his undergraduate degree in engineering science and mechanics at Virginia Tech, and his master and doctoral degrees in biomedical engineering from The University of Akron, Ohio.

In 1999, he joined UofL as faculty in the J.B. Speed School of Engineering Department of Mechanical Engineering, and served as the senior associate director for the university’s Micro/NanoTechnology Center for twelve years.

In 2005, Dr. Keynton became the founding chair of the Department of Bioengineering, and has since become a full professor and the Lutz Endowed Chair of Biomechanical Devices. Under his tenure, the department grew into the Speed School’s most productive department for basic and translational research, winning funding for multiple multi-million dollar projects. Simultaneously, he served as the acting scientific director for UofL’s Cardiovascular Innovation Institute for three years.

In 2014, Keynton joined the EVPRI office as Engineering Innovations Program Manager before becoming Director of Research Initiatives. Dr. Keynton actively advances innovation at UofL by serving as primary investigator on nationally-recognized innovation programs: Coulter Foundation Translational Research Partnership, NSF I-Corps Site, NSF AWARE:ACCESS, and on the leadership team of the NIH ExCITE REACH Hub

As an entrepreneur and advocate for translational research, Dr. Keynton has co-founded three separate companies based on technologies he helped develop. He holds eight issued U.S. patents, four issued foreign patents and has 15 provisional/non-provisional patent applications.

Dr. Keynton’s research focuses on Lab-on-a-Chip devices, microsensors, biomedical devices, and biomaterials. He received the Outstanding Young Scientist Award from the Houston Society of Engineering in Medicine and Biology and he is a fellow in both the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering and the National Academy of Inventors.

His work has also been noted by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), American Chemical Society (ACS), American Physical Society, Institute of Physics, MRS Bulletin, MIT Technology Review, Small Times Magazine, Micro/Nano Newsletter, RAD Magazine, Biophotonics International Magazine, Clinica Magazine, and National Public Radio State of Affairs Talk Radio Program.
