Important Notice for GI Bill Recipients for fall term Academic Year 2020-2021
Distance Education (Online) Courses
Per the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), if you are solely enrolled in distance education (online) courses you are entitled to ½ the national Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) average per month of full-time enrollment. One-half of the national BAH average equates to$858.50 per month of full-time enrollment. If you take one in-person or hybrid course during the semester, you are entitled to the full BAH amount of $1,497 per month of full-time enrollment.
If you are taking one hybrid course during the semester you are eligible to receive the full Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) percentage you are eligible for, up to 100% ($1,497) per month of full time enrollment.
NOTE: Under this scenarioyou are only eligible for the percentage above ½ per month of full time enrollmentwhile you are enrolled in a hybrid course.
For example: You are enrolled in one hybrid course for the first eight weeks of the semester and the second eight weeks you are enrolled in only online courses. You would be eligible to receive the full BAH percentage you are eligible for, up to 100% ($1,497 per month) of full time enrollmentfor the first eight weeks while you were in the hybrid course. For the second eight weeks you would be eligible for ½ the national BAH Housing average per month of full-time enrollment ($858.50 per month).
All courses are submitted to the VA based on dates of enrollment. If you are enrolled in courses that do not follow the whole semester, those courses will be certified to the VA based on the dates posted on your schedule. This could impact your housing allowance if you are eligible to receive it.
