How to apply

Requirements

  1. Students are normally expected to present an overall undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or a 3.2 GPA in the final two years of undergraduate study (last 60 semester hours)
  2. Applicants must get two letters of recommendation.
  3. Applicants must submit a personal statement. The statement should be 300-500 words in length (typed) in essay form.
    Please explain your reasons for applying to the master's program in political science at the University of Louisville. Discuss your professional or occupational objectives and how you envision the department’s program fitting into those objectives. Describe the areas of political science you find especially interesting for study and/or research and identify the political science faculty with whom you might be interested in working.

For Accelerated Program Applicants Only:

As of March 2023, students applying for admission into the Accelerated Program will NOT go through the Graduate School portal that students applying directly to the MA or the JD-MA will use. Instead, please email the following to polsgrad@louisville.edu with subject line “Accelerated Program application”:

  • Student identification number
  • Personal statement of 300-500 words: Please explain your reasons for applying to the master's program in political science at the University of Louisville. Discuss your professional or occupational objectives and how you envision the department’s program fitting into those objectives. Describe the areas of political science you find especially interesting for study and/or research and identify the political science faculty with whom you might be interested in working.
  • Two letters of recommendation emailed to polsgrad@louisville.edu. Students should NOT compile the letters themselves for submission, but rather recommenders should send directly via email.
  • Submit an unofficial transcript.

The Accelerated Program is only for UofL Political Science majors at this time.

Deadlines

Application for admission must be made by:
May 15 (Deadline for Fall semester)
October 15 (Deadline for Spring semester)

Students applying for graduate assistantships in the department must have all materials submitted by April 1.
