Reading Support

Preparation for the background knowledge demands included extended reading.

Reading support included one reading day per week of curriculum-focused trade and comic books(“Rock Cycle” for Middle School and “Big Bang and Chemical Reactions” for High School). Instruction was supported by pre-reading activities (picture walk, read aloud) as well as during-reading and after-reading activities (paired reading, summary writing). The reading selection of books proceeded from easier to more advanced reading/conceptual level. Longer books were read over a period of 1 to 4 weeks.
