Curious about the differences between a Masters or Graduate Certificate in Biostatistics? Click here and learn more
The Graduate Certificate in Biostatistics is a 15-16 credit hour program that requires 12 credit hours in core courses and 3-4 credit hours in electives (depending on the chosen courses). The courses are asynchronous and delivered in standard term lengths.
*Electives can be either PHST 624 Clinical Trials I (2 Hours) and PHST 625 Clinical Trials II (2 hours) or PHST 640 Statistical Methods for Research Design in Health Sciences (3 hours).
What are the advantages of taking this program before the Master of Science in Biostatistics?
The Graduate Certificate in Biostatistics is a 15-16 credit hour program (5-6 courses), allowing admitted students the opportunity to take several biostatistics classes prior to taking the leap into a fully online master’s program. Students who are interested in earning their master’s degree in biostatistics can apply the credits earned from the certificate program towards their master’s degree. While many of the courses in both programs overlap, the certificate program can be finished in less time and is an excellent choice for students who want to advance their degree and career opportunities but aren’t ready to fully commit to the online masters.
Will I need to complete Math Tools?
No. Math Tools provides basic instruction in the methods of calculus necessary for the master’s in biostatistics program and can fulfill the calculus requirement for that program’s admission, but it is not required for admission to the certificate program.
Are fall and summer the only start dates for the year? When should I apply?
Yes. Currently, fall and summer are the start terms for admitted students into the Graduate Certificate in Biostatistics program. Only students interested in eventually pursuing the MS in Biostatistics should seek summer admission. The recommended application deadline for the summer term is April 1, and June 30 for the fall term. We recommend you submit your complete application well in advance of the preferred application deadlines, as obtaining transcripts and other materials may take some time.
Will credits from this program transfer to the Master of Science in Biostatistics
Yes, all 15-16 credits earned in the Graduate Certificate in Biostatics program will transfer into the Master of Science in Biostatistics program. If students are not fully ready to commit to the MS in Biostatistics program, it is recommended that they consider applying for the graduate certificate first so they can take full advantage of transferring their earned credits towards their master’s degree if they decide to enroll later. Students will need to apply for the MS in Biostatistics separately when they are ready to transition into the masters in biostatistics program.
