On July 18, the University of Louisville celebrated the launch of UofL Care Partners, a collaboration of the Schools of Dentistry and Nursing. The urgent care-style clinic, located in the School of Dentistry, gives patients immediate access to nurse practitioner provided care, ensuring proper management of health issues before dental treatment.

Medical issues must be controlled in advance of treatment. For example, if a person received local anesthetic for a dental procedure and had uncontrolled high blood pressure or heart disease, such as an irregular heartbeat, it could result in potentially life-threatening complications.

In 2017, the School of Dentistry wrote more than 940 medical consults for patients who needed to follow-up with a medical care provider before receiving their dental treatment. More than 40-percent of these patients failed to complete the medical follow-up required for their dental treatment.

UofL is among just a handful of higher education institutions in the United States implementing a dental-nursing collaborative care model clinic.
