Music Education Program
The Bachelor of Music in Music Education degree is a professional degree with a strong emphasis on music teaching and learning. Music Education students pursue a curriculum with vocal or instrumental emphasis. The major performance area in this degree may be piano, voice, organ, guitar, or any band or orchestral instrument. The degree is highly concentrated with approximately 95 of the 140 hours in music. Graduates of the BME program receive initial teacher certification for the state of Kentucky, which is recognized by a reciprocity agreement in 45 additional states. Most BME graduates accept K-12 teaching positions within three months of graduation. The degree also prepares students for success in graduate school or other advanced studies in music. The Bachelor of Music in Music Education (Pre-Certification) degree is designed for students who intend to pursue the Master of Arts in Teaching program (MAT).
The Master of Arts in Teaching in Music Education is facilitated by the School of Music in partnership with the College of Education and Human Development. This one-year program involves two semesters of student teaching and graduate-level coursework, and results in Kentucky teacher certification. The School of Music also offers the Master of Music Education. This 30-hour program is designed to further the education and professional development of practicing educators or prepare scholars to pursue doctoral degrees in music education.
