Brazilian/Latin

July 10th thru 12th

The Brazilian/Latin Music Mini-Workshop aims to deepen your knowledge on genres from Central America and Brazil that, although are put under the general name Latin music, they have their own particularities. The instructors are from South America – Brazil, Colombia, Cuba and Ecuador – and interested in helping you learn how samba, bossa nova, baiao, salsa, cha-cha-cha, mambo and more differ from each other.

The Brazilian/Latin Music Mini-Workshop is modeled after the Aebersold Summer Jazz Workshops, where you will play in combos, have instrumental master classes, sessions on the style and history of the music, rhythm classes where you experience playing the rhythms first-hand, and of course Brazilian/Latin music on faculty and student concerts. You will be able to play those genres in a more authentic way. It will be fun too.

Admission will be limited in order to ensure balanced instrumentation for maximum experience.

Big Band

July 17th thru 19th

The Big Band Mini-Workshop aims to deepen your knowledge of large jazz ensemble performance during a concentrated time frame.  John La Barbera – internationally respected jazz composer, arranger and director – has constructed a program that will provide participants an intensive performance experience, exploring numerous styles – traditional to contemporary. An ideal workshop is not only for educators looking to hone their skills, but also for those who love participating in big band section playing.

Admission will be limited in order to ensure balanced instrumentation for maximum experience.

Jazz Piano

July 3rd thru 5th

The Jazz Piano Mini-Workshop is for pianists of all levels to gain a deeper understanding of techniques associated with jazz piano. You will learn practical voicings and approaches to both solo and ensemble performance. In addition, you will gain insight into the wide role piano has played throughout the history of jazz. There will be daily opportunities to play with professional level rhythm sections. This workshop is led by UofL Jazz Professors, Gabe Evens and Chris Fitzgerald, who aim to create a low-pressure, friendly environment where you can learn a ton while having fun!

Jazz Vocal
