Dr. Strauss is Director of Student Mental Health, within the Campus Health Service. He received his undergraduate degree in Psychology from Stanford and obtained his medical degree from New York University. Dr. Strauss completed his psychiatric residency training at the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute and Brentwood VA Hospital. He received advanced training in organizational consultation from the Cincinnati Psychoanalytic Institute. Dr. Strauss received his board certification in psychiatry in 1980. He has been an examiner for the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology since 1981 and a senior examiner since 1986. He has served on the staff of 30 group relation conferences, including the A.K. Rice Institute Annual Conferences in 1988 and 2002; he directed ten such conferences since 1990, including the A.K. Rice Institute annual Conference in 2007, 2008 and 2009. Dr Strauss previously served as adult residency director 1992-2000 and medical director of Emergency Psychiatry at University Hospital 2001-2006. He is past president of the American Association of Directors of Psychiatry Residency Training. He gives the psychiatry clerkship lectures on suicide and teaches the Introduction to Psychotherapy seminar for PGY-2 residents. He is also a member of the Crisis Intervention Team Training.
