Dr Thomson received his Ph.D. from the University of Tasmania, Australia, and directed the Microbiology Laboratory at the Repatriation General Hospital, Hobart, Tasmania from 1973 until he moved to the United States in 1988. In the United States his professional positions include:

  • Professor of Clinical Microbiology & Immunology and Director of Antibiotic Research at Creighton University, Omaha, Nebraska
  • Senior Scientist at Covance, Indianapolis, Indiana
  • Clinical Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at University of Louisville, Louisville, Kentucky

 

He was an editor of Clinical Microbiology Reviews for 10 years, a member of several editorial boards, Chair of the Antimicrobial Chemotherapy Division of the ASM, and is a Fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America; the American Academy of Microbiology; and the Australian Society for Microbiology, and is a member of the Australian Cricketers Association.

He is a grant reviewer for several national and international government agencies and has 109 first-author and co-author publications and over 400 presentations at educational forums throughout the world. His research interests are antibiotic resistance, clinical relevance of antibiotic susceptibility tests, and β-lactam antibiotics.
