Meena Vessell, M.D. is a PGY 7 neurosurgery resident. She was born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio and attended medical school at Northeast Ohio Medical University. She was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha society in her junior year of medical school. She received the American Medical Association Award for Excellence in Leadership, United States Public Health Service Award, served on the American Medical Association Council on Legislation, and received the Surgical Excellence Award in recognition of her performance in the Department of Surgery.

Since joining the neurosurgery department at the University of Louisville, Dr. Vessell has presented her research at various national and international conferences. She is co-PI of a prospective clinical vagal nerve stimulator trial which is grant funded through the Norton Foundation. The trial began recruitment in April 2021.

She is also a socioeconomic fellow with the Council of State Neurosurgical Societies which guides organized neurosurgical efforts on advocacy, policy and socioeconomics for the field. In 2021, she received the Resident Quality Award from the neurosurgery department for her work on surgical quality in pediatric neurosurgery. In her 7th year of neurosurgery training, she will be pursuing an enfolded epilepsy fellowship with Dr. Neimat and Dr. Mutchnick. Dr. Vessell is pursuing pediatric neurosurgery as her subspecialty.

Prior to neurosurgery, Dr. Vessell was a professional Indian classical dancer and was scholarship funded by the National Foundation for the Advancement of Artists. Outside the hospital, she enjoys spending time with family, traveling, hiking, and enjoying the arts.
