Dr. Shafer received his medical degree from the University of Louisville School of Medicine. He completed his training in Neurology at the University of Louisville in 2006. He went on to complete a fellowship in clinical Neurophysiology at the University of Louisville in 2007 with an emphasis on epilepsy and neuromuscular disease. He received additional training in epilepsy in 2008.

In 2009 Dr. Shafer became the director of the University of Louisville Clinical Neurophysiology program and the director of the University of Louisville Epilepsy Monitoring Unit.

Dr. Shafer is clinically interested in all areas of epilepsy, including nonepileptic seizures.

He is involved in multiple clinical trials for investigational medications for the treatment of epilepsy.
