Transcatheter Aortic Valvular Replacement (TAVR) Procedure

Edwards Sapien® Bioprosthetic Aortic Valve

an image of a normal heart and one with calcified and narrow aortic valveA calcified, narrowed aortic valve (aortic stenosis) blocks the flow of blood from the heart to the brain and body. This can result in shortness of breath, chest pain, fainting and ultimately heart failure. Using a catheter-based approach via the artery in the leg, the SAPIEN bioprosthetic (bovine pericardium) valve can be implanted at the site of the diseased aortic valve using techniques similar to those used during coronary stent placement. This procedure is performed without open-heart surgery and without the use a cardiopulmonary by-pass pump.
