Sean Clifford, MD Chair
Welcome to the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine at the University of Louisville. Our mission is to provide exceptional, patient-centered anesthetic care at the University of Louisville Hospital, Jewish Hospital, Norton Children's Hospital, and the Louisville Veterans Administration Medical Center. We strive to be a preeminent academic authority in the broad landscape of perioperative medicine. In addition to delivering expert care for standard anesthetics, our faculty is composed of board certified specialists in Critical Care, Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology, Pain Management, Pediatric Anesthesiology, and Regional Anesthesiology.

Our department is committed to developing superb, independent practitioners equipped with the skills to be leaders in both private practice and academic medicine and the desire to promote the advancement of the medical discipline of Anesthesiology. The volume and complexity of our clinical caseload creates an environment that challenges our residents on a daily basis and develops a skill set that enables our graduates to provide the highest quality care throughout their career. Our faculty are committed to excellence in education that extends from the operating room to the classroom; residents learn through class specific lectures, Journal Club, Grand Rounds, Morbidity and Mortality conference, as well as through simulation, standardized patient encounters, and mock oral exams. We aim to promote an atmosphere of scholarly inquiry where our residents are fully engaged in quality improvement, patient safety, and scientific pursuits. In addition to our core Residency Program, we currently offer fellowship training in Pain Management and Critical Care Anesthesiology.

The University of Louisville Department of Anesthesiology is an outstanding place to work and train. We take extraordinary pride in our community, the care we deliver, the accomplishments of our faculty and staff, and the success of our graduates. As a community, Louisville is a vibrant metropolitan area that is affordable, family friendly, and filled with cultural events, beautiful outdoor activities, concerts, athletics, and a top-notch restaurant scene. As a department, we promote a culture that extends beyond the clinical day; our team of physicians, CRNAs, residents, and staff not only enjoy working together, but also enjoy celebrating life socially outside of the clinical realm.

We strongly believe that our residency program provides exceptional training opportunities for clinical, educational, and research pursuits. We greatly appreciate your interest in our department and look forward to hearing from you.
