Applying to Medical School

Deciding when and where to apply

When it's time to apply to medical school, you will either complete the AMCAS (American Medical College Application Service) for allopathic medical school or AACOMAS (American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine Application Service) for osteopathic medical school.

With assured admission, students who meet the required protocol will be accepted to the University of Louisville School of Medicine. Learn more about the University of Louisville School of Medicine Admissions.

AMCAS provides an instruction manual. Read it and keep it on hand to answer any questions you may have or contact them at 202-828-0600 or amcas@aamc.org.

Please be aware of the various medical school application deadlines and their pre-med requirements. Some medical schools may have some additional requirements, especially when it comes to AP coursework, on-line coursework and transferred courses from a community/junior college [PDF].

Please keep in mind that the University of Louisville School of Medicine has Technical Standards that all accepted applicants must meet in order to progress through medical school. Please read those before you embark on your medical school journey.

Assured Admission; Early Assurance and Regular MD

All of our students are considered as an assured admission candidate whether they apply exclusively to U of L or not. However, students should notify our office prior to applying to indicate if they will apply exclusively to U of L or include additional medical schools.

  • Those applying exclusively to U of L must receive clearance to apply for early assurance and must not submit their AMCAS application until they are notified. Early assurance classification waives them their AMCAS fee. They are not allowed to apply elsewhere and will also be waived their secondary application fee from the U of L School of Medicine. They must meet all of the assured admission criteria and complete the program in order to be accepted to the U of L School of Medicine. Any deficiency may result in them being moved to the general applicant pool for consideration; which is highly competitive.
  • Students who choose to include additional medical schools, must also apply to the U of L School of Medicine in order to be considered for Assured Admissions. Since your first school is free, students are encouraged to list U of L first and then pay the additional charge for the other medical schools of choice. They are also waived the U of L secondary application fee, but must pay the AMCAS fee. They must meet all of the assured admission criteria and complete the program in order to be accepted to the U of L School of Medicine. Any deficiency may result in them being moved to the general applicant pool for consideration, which is highly competitive. If they are denied admission to other medical schools or receive multiple offers of acceptance, that does not hinder them from being considered at the U of L School of Medicine.
