Letter from the SBS Director

A letter from Dr. Gary Gregg, director of the Strategic Broadening Seminar

McConnell Center Director Gary Gregg, PhDAugust 1, 2018

Dear Soldier and Student:

Congratulations on your selection into the McConnell Center’s Strategic Broadening Seminar at the University of Louisville! Out of hundreds of applicants, you have been selected as one of 30 participants to represent your organization within the U.S. Army in this 30-day, graduate-level intellectual experience in Louisville, Kentucky.

The Strategic Broadening Seminar (SBS) has been designed by the University of Louisville’s McConnell Center, the Pentagon and the U.S. Army Human Resources Command to help meet the calls from the Chief of Staff of the Army to create broader, educated and more flexible Army leaders to face new and dynamic challenges in the 21st century.

The emphasis of this Seminar will be on “broadening” the participants’ engagement with leadership, strategic thinking and contemporary world events related to Russia and the Asia Pacific region. No two days will be the same. You will take part in discussions of ancient Greek philosophy one day, study the origins of the American constitutional order the next and then immerse yourselves in democratization challenges in Asia the day after that. You will be given readings to discuss with your fellow soldiers in seminars, hear from world-class scholars in lectures, take part in simulations and tours and work in teams to develop a strategic issue briefing for Army leadership. And, we will be sure to have a little Louisville-style fun along the way!

From Monday, Aug. 27, through Saturday, Sept. 29, you will stay in the Homewood Suites by Hilton Downtown Louisville. Homewood is surrounded by a thriving local restaurant scene, museums, the river parks and the Yum! Center, one of the best arenas in college sports and entertainment. Most of your weekdays will be spent on the campus of the University of Louisville, which is only a few minutes south of your hotel.

Your host will be the University’s McConnell Center. Kentucky's senior U.S. Senator–and current Senate Majority Leader–Mitch McConnell established the McConnell Center in 1991 to educate, mentor and support Kentucky’s most outstanding young leaders. Since its founding, the Center has grown a national reputation for leadership education and has hosted such figures as U.S. President George W. Bush, U.S. Vice President Joe Biden, CIA Director David Petraeus, Secretaries of State ranging from Colin Powell to Hillary Clinton, Secretaries of Defense including Leon Panetta, and numerous other national figures and award-winning scholars.

Please review the registration form, educational overview and logistics overview to help prepare for your arrival in Louisville and to make this an extraordinary educational journey for us all. Please complete the registration form by Aug. 13.

The faculty and staff of the University of Louisville thank you for your service to our country and look forward to meeting you at our reception and opening dinner on Aug. 27.

Best Regards,

Gary L. Gregg, PhD
