Teachers complete 7-month program on Plato's 'Republic'

Nine Kentucky social studies and history teachers recently completed “Vital Remnants,” the McConnell Center’s pilot 7-month digital professional development series to engage historic primary source materials.

As part of the Center’s civic education program, teachers read Plato’s Republic over several months, engaging directly in the text, supplementing their readings with podcast lessons, discussion prompts and webinars.

Teachers who successfully completed the program and earned 10 professional development credits include:

  • Monty Edwards, Bullitt East High School
  • Doug Henry, Bullitt Lick Middle School
  • Laureen Laumeyer, Bullitt County Schools
  • Cara Lawson, Lloyd Memorial High School
  • Grant Miller, Maurice Bowling Middle School
  • Mary Sexton, Jefferson County High School
  • Janet Sivis-O’Connell, West Jessamine High School
  • Debi Strubler, Retired (elementary school)
  • Adam Webster, Logan County High School

“We are so proud of these teachers for continuing their education,” said Natalie Smith, Civic Education Coordinator. “They have accomplished a great feat in reading and comprehending Plato’s Republic. I’m sure they will take the lessons they’ve learned and impart their newfound knowledge to their students.”
