THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELED DUE TO THE THREAT OF SEVERE WEATHER.

In this McConnell Center lecture, Houston Baptist University professor Barbara Elliott will consider Alexis de Tocqueville's "Democracy in America" and the tension between self- and community interest. Tocqueville found that community organizations, local governments and volunteerism are key forces in America's ability to be both free and democratic. Today, however, we increasingly lament the decline of local institutions. Elliott will consider what this trend may portend for the future of democracy in America.

This discussion marks the third of four events in the McConnell Center's 2014 "The Future of Democracy in America" public lecture series.
