Brief Chronology of the Louisville School of Art

In 1987 Madeline Covi, Dorothy Kohnhorst Hodapp, and Charlotte Price wrote Tapestry of an Art Association, 1909-1984. This 45-page book is an excellent history of the Art Association of Louisville, its predecessor groups and those in the community who supported its efforts -- creative artists, teachers of art, and the students who used its facilities. We will not recreate that history here, but instead give a chronology of important events documented by the records.

  • 1909: Louisville Art Association founded by a group of local artists
  • 1909: Art Association holds first exhibition representing 35 contemporary artists of the United States and Europe
  • 1910: Louisville Artists League formed by members Louisville Art Association "to encourage local artists and assure them an opportunity to exhibit"
  • 1914: Handicraft Guild formed by artistic people interested in crafts
  • 1920: Louisville Artists League merges with Louisville Art Association
  • 1921: Fayette Barnum begins instruction on design for members of the Handicraft Guild
  • 1925: Louisville Art Association launches children's free art classes
  • 1929: Handicraft Guild enlarges activities into a school, changes name to Art Center of Louisville and names school Art Center School, with Fayette Barnum as director
  • 1935: Adult Education students from University of Louisville offered accredited courses in the evenings, at the Art Center
  • 1939: Art Center moves to 2111 South First Street, near the University of Louisville campus
  • 1942: Louisville Art Association and Art Center of Louisville merge to become Art Center Association
  • 1942: Crit Club formed by artists who wanted to meet and discuss their paintings
  • 1944: Mary Spencer Nay becomes Director of Art Center School
  • 1956: Sculpture Society formed
  • 1959: Art Center celebrates its Golden Jubilee
  • 1966: Mary Louise Baringer becomes director
  • 1968: Sculptor Alan Paulson assumes directorship
  • 1968: Art Center School becomes Louisville School of Art
  • 1969: Louisville School of Art moves to Anchorage, KY under interim director Marlene Byck
  • 1970: New director, Osmond Guy, appointed
  • 1970: Course in Industrial Design added to school's curriculum

  • 1980: Art Center Association moves to The Water Tower
  • 1981: Louisville School of Art moves to The Cloister at 800 East Chestnut Street
  • 1983: Louisville School of Art closes, absorbed by the University of Louisville
  • 1983: John Begley appointed director of Art Center Association
  • 1984: Name changed to Water Tower Art Association

In 1983, when the Louisville School of Art closed its doors and was absorbed by the University of Louisville, the school's records were appraised and subsequently transferred to the University Archives.

Brief Description of the Collection

Included in this material are minutes, financial documents, legal documents, exhibition catalogs and reports of the school. Also preserved are the records of many of the Louisville art groups which preceded it. In some cases there were only a few pieces, but for two of the groups, the Louisville Art Association and the Art Center Association, the records are extensive.

Arrangement

The records are arranged in eleven series beginning with the predecessor organizations and then according to format, with a final series consisting of later accessions. An order was imposed for the organizations as follows: Board of Directors material, including minutes of meetings; financial and legal records; membership records; correspondence; and exhibit material. The Biography files are in alphabetical order and the Scrapbooks series is arranged chronologically. They were preserved on microfilm in a companion project, microfilm project #120, "The Louisville School of Art Scrapbooks," and mainly consist of newspaper clippings concerning the Art Center and its activities from 1929 to 1981.
