Lawlapalooza

Lawlapalooza is the Louisville legal community’s annual battle of the bands. Since 2005, this high-energy event has brought together legal professionals, students, and music lovers to raise funds for the Judge Ellen B. Ewing Foundation.

Supporting Future Public Interest Lawyers

Proceeds from Lawlapalooza support summer fellowships for University of Louisville Brandeis School of Law students. These fellowships provide students with valuable, hands-on legal experience in Family law, Domestic violence and spouse abuse, and HIV/AIDS-related legal issues.

Fellows work directly with clients at the Legal Aid Society, gaining experience in client interviews, legal research, drafting, and even courtroom representation.

“I learned the power that comes with being an attorney and the ability we have to change people’s lives for the better,” shared a recent Ellen Ewing Fellow.

How the Competition Works

Lawlapalooza features local bands—often made up of legal professionals—competing for the top prize. Each band collects donations in a “tip jar,” and the winner is determined by the amount they raise. All proceeds benefit the Ellen Ewing Fund.

About Judge Ellen B. Ewing

The Judge Ellen B. Ewing Foundation was established in 2005 through generous gifts from the Louisville Bar Foundation and the Women Lawyers Association of Jefferson County. It honors Judge Ewing’s legacy of public service and dedication to justice.

Judge Ewing was a trailblazer:

  • First woman to sit on Kentucky’s juvenile court bench

  • Served as a judge on Jefferson Circuit Court until her retirement in 1998

  • Recognized with numerous honors, including the Brandeis Distinguished Alumni Award and LBA Judge of the Year

The foundation ensures her legacy continues through student fellowships that serve the community.
