Central Motor Wheel of America (CMWA) has earned recognition for their progress in reducing energy usage through the Kentucky Save Energy Now (KY SEN) initiative. The award was presented June 11, 2012, at the facility in Paris, Kentucky.
Twenty-eight facilities from across the Commonwealth have signed on to the KY SEN program since 2010, and CMWA is the second facility to achieve Level Five status. CMWA's Environmental Activities Team was recognized at the June 11, 2012, award ceremony.
CMWA has been committed to environmental management and energy use reduction for a number of years, implementing many energy saving projects ranging from demand management, employee training and equipment shut-down policies to facility and equipment upgrades. The company signed the KY SEN pledge in 2010, committing to reduce energy use at their facility by 2.5 percent per year for 10 years. Since then, they have worked with KPPC engineers to strengthen their energy management program, and have been recognized at previous KPPC events for reaching the first four levels of achievement for KY SEN, including:
Signing the program pledge form and developing an energy use baseline
Instituting an energy policy, establishing a team and participating in training
Identifying opportunities and developing an action plan
Implementing the plan and periodically evaluating progress
This award recognizes CMWA's success in reaching the final level of the program. Level Five requires companies to develop and implement an internal recognition program for their employees, and to mentor other KY SEN program participants as they seek to improve energy management at their facilities.

Presenting the award, KPPC Executive Director Cam Metcalf lauded the company’s commitment to long-term energy savings. “KPPC’s focus is not on seeing its clients achieve a one-time energy and cost savings, but on helping them build strong energy management programs that will realize year-after-year sustainable results. CMWA has made the commitment, and is achieving its goals of significant, long-term energy-use reductions and cost savings,” he said.
CMWA is a joint venture of Central Motor Wheel of Japan, Ltd. (CMW) and Toyota Tsusho of America (TAI) located on 55.4 acres in Paris, KY. The company manufacture steel and aluminum wheels for the automotive industry through two divisions.
The ISO 50001 energy management standard is an international framework for industrial plants, commercial facilities or entire organizations to manage energy, including all aspects of procurement and use. The standard provides organizations and companies with technical and management strategies to increase energy efficiency, reduce costs and improve environmental performance. Superior Energy Performance (SEP) is a certification program that provides industrial facilities with a roadmap for achieving continual improvement in energy efficiency while maintaining competitiveness. A central element of SEP is implementation of the global energy management standard, ISO 50001, with additional requirements to achieve and document energy performance improvements.
The Department of Energy (DOE), Advanced Manufacturing Office's (AMO) state and regional energy efficiency partners are coordinating SEP demonstrations throughout the United States. To date, six demonstrations have occurred and the seventh and last demonstration is currently underway within the Northeast. Republic Conduit, Louisville Facility and KPPC have partnered and are currently participating in the Northeast SEP Demonstration. KPPC serves as a coach for the company and offers guidance as the facility develops an Energy Management System and satisfies requirements established by ISO 50001 and SEP. Major accomplishments by the team include developing an energy policy, establishing an energy team, calculating the facility’s energy performance indicators and identifying potential significant energy uses.
The Northeast SEP Demonstration project started in January 2012 and is scheduled to be completed by March 2013. KPPC has participated in two rounds of training for the demonstration – held in Atlanta, Georgia, in January 2012 and Stratford, Connecticut, in June 2012.
EPA Honors 2012 Green Chemistry Challenge Award Winners By recognizing groundbreaking scientific solutions to real-world environmental problems, EPA’s Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Program award winners have significantly reduced the hazards associated with designing, manufacturing and using chemicals. The program promotes research and development of less-hazardous alternatives to existing technologies that reduce or eliminate waste, particularly hazardous waste, in industrial production. An independent panel of technical experts convened by the American Chemical Society Green Chemistry Institute selected the 2012 winners from among scores of nominated technologies.
During the 17 years of the program, EPA has received 1,492 nominations and presented awards to 88 winners. Winning technologies alone are responsible for reducing the use or generation of more than 825 million pounds of hazardous chemicals, saving 21 billion gallons of water and eliminating 7.8 billion pounds of carbon dioxide equivalent releases to air. These benefits are in addition to significant energy and cost savings by the winners and their customers.

Trimble County, Kentucky School District's Energy Bill Down $30,000 Last Year From Madison Courier.com. Trimble County High School saw a large reduction in energy usage this past school year. Sherman Adams, the district's energy manager, told the school board this month that last year saw a 2 percent reduction in electric usage throughout the district, as compared to a 10 percent reduction this year. There was also a 22 percent reduction in gas usage this year, which was helped by the mild winter, Adams said.
For this school year there was a total savings of $18,893 in electric costs and $10,159 in gas costs. The savings can be attributed in part to some improvement projects, including updated lighting at Trimble County Middle School and exterior lighting at Trimble County High School.
Advanced Solar Photovoltaics July 10-12, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. ET, Frankfort During this three-day workshop, an operational photovoltaic system will be available to provide hands-on experiences with system components. Participants will be able to view wiring, mounting and programming features up close and will walk through the commissioning and troubleshooting process with the instructor. The model PV system used for the workshop will be a 1.4 KW battery-based off-grid system, built onto a Mobile Classroom trailer. Ample time for questions will be provided.
