The Kentucky Division of Compliance Assistance is pleased to announce the availability of two workshops on the proper management of pharmaceutical waste as hazardous waste.

The goal of the workshop is to educate the regulated community on the environmental and human health impacts resulting from the improper management of pharmaceutical waste. From the workshops, participants can expect to gain valuable knowledge to reduce environmental liability, increase operating efficiency, and improve environmental performance.
- Introduction to the Hospitals for a Healthy Environment 10-Step Blueprint for Managing Pharmaceutical Waste
- Review of the Resource Conservation Recovery Act and its applicability to pharmaceutical waste as hazardous waste
- Identification of pharmaceutical waste as hazardous waste
- Handling of hazardous and nonhazardous pharmaceuticals, including labeling, storage, packaging, and shipping
- Developing and implementing a pharmaceutical waste management system
- Minimizing pharmaceutical waste generation

Charlotte A. Smith, R. Ph., M.S., HEM, president of PharmEcology® Associates, LLC, has over 30 years of
experience in the pharmaceutical industry. She has studied the EPA’s Resource Conservation and Recovery Act
(RCRA) and related interpretations as they apply to waste pharmaceuticals to assure regulatory compliance of the
pharmaceutical reverse distribution company she founded in 1991. An educator by training, Ms. Smith has made
hundreds of presentations to professional pharmacy groups to share this hard-won information. She says, “Quite
often my audiences have never heard of RCRA and its potentially serious impact on organizations and
individuals. It is extremely important that they understand how to comply with these regulations.” Recognizing
the need to focus on disseminating this information and to develop systems to implement compliant procedures
within the healthcare system, Ms. Smith founded PharmEcology® Associates, LLC in 2000.
