2009 KPPC Environmental Sustainability Award
Kentucky Companies Recognized for Environmental Sustainability Efforts
September 23, 2009
LOUISVILLE, Ky.— KPPC—the Kentucky Pollution Prevention Center—selected Akebono Brake Corporation of Elizabethtown and Denyo Manufacturing of Danville as winners of KPPC’s 2009 Environmental Sustainability Award.
The award recognizes Kentucky companies that have demonstrated a commitment to the principles of sustainability: ensuring the social well-being not only of their company as a whole, but also their employees and the community around them; identifying opportunities and implementing environmental-related improvements to their facility; and enhancing economic outcomes related to savings from environmental improvements.
Both companies receiving the award have well-developed pollution prevention and energy efficiency programs and their recent activities have spanned the social, environmental and economic aspects of sustainability.
- Akebono Brake – Elizabethtown Plant has implemented a number of energy conservation projects resulting in a reduction of its carbon footprint, improved recycling efforts, reduced water usage and made significant financial investments to reduce chemical usage in its production processes. The company also worked with local government to conduct a household hazardous waste collection event at its facility for the citizens of Hardin County.
- Denyo Manufacturing has implemented a four-day work week, reducing air emissions and gasoline consumption by commuting employees, energy consumption at the facility and the company’s carbon footprint. Employees receive the same pay as they did with a five-day work week, while production has remained stable and in some cases improved. In addition, Denyo’s recent pollution prevention and energy efficiency efforts have resulted in improved recycling of scrap metal, reduced water and natural gas consumption, improved wastewater treatment operations, better management of chemicals and substantial financial savings.
“KPPC is very pleased to recognize these two Kentucky companies for their significant efforts to continually improve their operations. With the support and vision of management, as well as strong teams who implement environmental initiatives, both Akebono Brake and Denyo have shown long-term commitment to environmental sustainability. Their contribution to reducing waste and improving Kentucky’s environment is commendable,” says KPPC Executive Director Cam Metcalf.
Accepting the award, Doug Morgan, Akebono Plant Manager, said, "We at Akebono are proud to be recognized by the Kentucky Pollution Prevention Center for our associate's efforts in something as important as protecting our environment. We are especially proud of the fact that this is recognition of a long term commitment by the Elizabethtown Plant in conserving our natural resources and performance of various pollution prevention projects. The word 'sustainability' is key and all of our associates have contributed in making this award possible throughout our 21 years of operation."
The KPPC Environmental Sustainability Awards were presented in conjunction with national Pollution Prevention (P2) Week (September 21-27), a national awareness campaign that encourages individuals, businesses, and government to emphasize and highlight their pollution prevention and sustainability activities and achievements, expand current pollution prevention efforts and commit to new actions. The week is a time when businesses, environmental groups and citizens can join forces for a common cause. By sharing information about P2, businesses can become more competitive, businesses and government can realize cost savings, and environmental quality can be enhanced.
