Set Performance Goals
Once your facility has assessed energy performance and opportunities (Step Two) the next step is to set achievable and measurable performance goals. Setting performance goals helps the Energy Manager/Coordinator and appointed Energy Team continually promote your facility's commitment to continual improvement and provides a framework for the energy management plan.
Performance goals further help to monitor the success of the energy management program by identifying specific areas of progress and setbacks.

Setting facility-wide performance goals provides a unifying framework with which to monitor and measure energy management program objectives. A facility may set an overall reduction goal in energy consumption, which may be tracked in percent energy use reduction, fiscal year or calendar year cost avoidance and/or a diminishing carbon footprint. A facility may also include more qualitative goals, such as increasing energy awareness throughout the community-at-large or inviting employees to carry the energy message home and encourage improvements there.
Benchmarking multiple facilities within a larger corporate structure can help identify which facilities have adopted the best energy management practices. Part of an energy action plan can include identifying replicable energy management practices from the best-performing facilities and adopting those corporation-wide.
Facilities need to establish target dates for performance goals, usually by calendar and/or fiscal year. Some performance goals may span several years.
After reviewing your energy performance and opportunities assessments, your facility will have a baseline of information about energy consumption. This baseline information will include typical energy costs and energy consumption over the course of a year, results of motor, lighting and equipment inventories, evaluations of past projects and practices, and a review of any technical assessments or audits performed. This information - in combination with other factors which may include budget constraints, corporate objectives, or pending changes that would dramatically impact energy consumption (adding or removing a new production line or building square footage) - will assist your facility in setting reasonable and achievable energy management goals.
