Message from the Dean
Greetings from the Kent School of Social Work at the University of Louisville. I hope this message finds you and your loved ones well. This has been one of the most challenging and change-filled semesters I have experienced during my nearly 30-year academic career. We have altered our patterns of working, caring for loved ones, and living in general. As I write this, I recognize this may continue to be a frightening and anxiety laden time for some even as our leaders continue discussing a return to “normal” activities.
To our students, faculty, and staff, I commend you for your determination and perseverance. Many of you have made the substantial shift from in-person to online education which is no small task. Our faculty and research teams have devised and begun new online and virtual research protocols. Additionally, many have adapted to new, and in some cases additional, caregiving responsibilities and homeschool teaching duties. For those able to adjust their work environment, you have taken different shifts, set up remote work solutions, and continue to support your communities and families enabling us to successfully complete the semester. We are grateful for all you do to make this possible.
Usually at this time, we would be celebrating our graduates at the Kent School Graduation Party and the UofL graduation ceremony. Unfortunately, we are unable to continue these traditions in person this semester. In their place, the Kent School will release a Graduation Video – stay tuned! While this certainly doesn’t replace the excitement and fellowship of our traditional celebrations, it gives us an opportunity to mark this important transition as our graduates move forward to experience new challenges and opportunities. I wish you all the best in your future endeavors and I am confident you all have a bright future ahead. Now more than ever, the world needs social workers to help the many who are hurting and those in worse shape due to the pandemic.
I have faith we will return to campus and our familiar routines before long. Our community depends on a thriving university and I am confident we will return to our normal activities. The Kent School will be here. Team Kent is an enthusiastic and dynamic band of alumni, students, and employees. Now, more than ever, I am proud to be a Louisville Cardinal and the Dean of the Kent School of Social Work.
