Kent Photovoice Project on Exhibition at Space XX Gallery in Seoul, Korea

Seoul Korea

An Art-Advocacy Exhibition entitled, The Past-Present: The Past Called by the Present designed by Assistant Professor Kyoungmee Byun, Northern Arizona University, School of Art, and Dr. Lesley Harris, Kent School, Associate Professor, opened June 26, 2021 at Space XX Gallery in Seoul, Korea. The Past-Present explores how the recent past is revisited to reconsider the ramifications of such events as war, disease, and those involve illegitimate political power. Incorporating the memories, traces, and documentations, the artists re-present the past to provide renewed experiences and personal and public memories. Using photovoice as a method for research and engagement with youth in Vietnam who have been orphaned due to HIV/AIDS and raised by their grandparents, Dr. Harris and Professor Byun’s exhibition also speaks to more universal issues such as the spread of HIV/AIDS in Vietnam and the most recent COVID-19 pandemic. Both pandemics agitated the existence of humanity to intervene in the process of constructing public memories of the present issues that are becoming the past. The past and present are not only closely interconnected and but also constantly reshape each other.

To fully communicate with the visitors, the work adopts various media—photography, video, and sound installation—and unconventional methodologies such as data analysis and an EEG (electroencephalogram) recording. Professor Byun designed the space for the visitors to experience the show as an interaction with the entire space as well as the artwork. In response to the ongoing pandemic, the exhibition also guides the visitors’ movement to keep social and physical distance as a new model for exhibition design in the post-pandemic era.

Professor Byun and Dr. Harris would also like to thank Kent School PhD students, Rebecka Bloomer, Sara Williams and Doroty Sato as well as Victory Osezua from the School of Public Health for their work on the exhibition and programming for youth in Vietnam.

The exhibition has been covered three times in Korean media:
