JOB TITLE: Assistant Director, Dahlem Supercomputer Laboratory

Assist the Director in managing the Dahlem CAE Lab facility. Administer the IBM RS/6000 SP Supercomputer system and associated equipment.


Supervise operation, installation, and maintenance of the IBM RS/6000 SP 28 node cluster, including hardware and software. Evaluate, implement, and recommend plans to improve computing facilities, networks, and services. Isolate and forecast system problems and determine appropriate solutions to minimize system downtime.

Monitor system performance, availability, and security. Research and execute plans designed to improve these factors through system configuration, hardware tuning, and application of new technologies.

Provide consultation and training to Speed School faculty, staff, and students on computers, networks, and software. Maintain, provide, and seek out sources of documentation for the IBM RS/600 SP A.I.X. operating system and parallel-computing environment.

Supervise Dahlem CAE Lab facilities and student employees. Evaluate and aid student employees to manager lab facilities, maintain PC systems, provide assistance to lab patrons, demonstrate facilities to visitors, and perform a variety of system management functions. Aid in creating excellent service levels and customer satisfaction.

Plan and evaluate future system software and hardware to meet anticipated needs. Work and aid faculty and staff in implementing and converting instructional classroom software to be used on the IBM system.


Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, or related field.


Five years of related experience. An equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience may be substituted for the requirements noted.
