Job Summary

To provide assistance to Providers in a variety of patient-related care activities. Facilitate patient flow, obtain vital signs and document in medical chart appropriately. Make referral appointments and obtain necessary authorization from insurance companies and document on charts appropriately. Assist with minor surgery procedures and in admitting patient(s).

Duties and Responsibilities

Facilitate patient flow, escort patients to exam rooms, obtain vital signs, elicit reason for visit; document patient information in chart; prepare patient for exam; assist Providers during exam which includes lifting patients to exam table if needed, etc. Assist with procedures in minor surgery. Perform testing on patients and administer medication to patients.

Make referral appointments and obtain any necessary authorization from insurance companies and document information in patient's chart appropriately. Re-schedule appointments when necessary. Assist with admitting patients, obtain authorization from the various insurance companies, forward admission papers and arrange transportation.

Prepare specimens obtained from patients and deliver to appropriate distribution site, along with paperwork. Stock exam rooms (empty bio-waste and arrange for pick-up). Order medical supplies. Keep sample medication area orderly. Check for expiration dates; call for samples when needed, order medication from the pharmacy. Clean instruments; prepare for sterilization; complete paperwork; arrange for transportation and pick-up. Keep work area orderly.

Check crash cart daily, perform a "quick-check" and ensure defribullator is functioning properly and replace as needed.

Checking patients in and out, collecting payments and co-payments, gathering insurance information and obtaining necessary authorizations. Answer telephones, route calls, take triage messages and call in medications. Check fee slips for charges and signatures; send to billing. Confirm appointments; maintain a log of all outgoing referrals. Schedule diagnostic testing. Complete labs and x-ray forms.

Knowledge, Training and Skills

Completion of post high school Medical Assistant or related program.


Two years of related experience. An equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience may be substituted for the requirements noted.
