JOB TITLE: Hazardous Materials Technician

JOB SUMMARY

Pick up and transport hazardous wastes, properly package, segregate and assist in shipment of wastes to off-campus sites.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Pick up hazardous wastes, review wastes for proper action, and segregate substances according to chemical compatibility to ensure proper storage prior to shipment off-site.

Prepare and maintain records as required by hazardous waste regulations and University policies.

Assist in the maintenance of all technical equipment and routinely inspect and maintain hazardous materials vehicle.

Assist in responding to spills or leaks of hazardous materials, instigate appropriate remedial measures, and record pertinent information for reporting purposes.

Assist in training of generators in proper procedures for handling wastes.

Provide assistance in development of a chemical redistribution program and in implementation of a computer tracking system.

Assist in environmental monitoring and/or sampling.

NOWLEDGE, TRAINING, AND SKILLS

Specialized training beyond high school with a working knowledge of hazardous materials handling, EPA and DOT regulations, and general mechanical aptitude. Pre-employment physical required. Valid driver's license.

EXPERIENCE

Two years of related experience. An equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience may be substituted for the requirements noted.
