JOB SUMMARY

 

Assist supervisor and receive/process tissue specimens for a variety of staining, microtomy and enzyme histochemistry procedures.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILTIES

 

Immunofluorescence and immunoperoxidase techniques for light microscopy.

Plastic embedding, cutting and staining of tissues for light microscopy.

Special stains for neuropathology (to include, but not limited to, myelin, axonal and glial stains).

Muscle and nerve enzyme histochemistry procedures. Includes cutting, staining muscle biopsy specimens satisfactorily. Includes specimen orientation and snap (flash freezing), grossing, dissection, orientation and freezing of complex specimens without artifact.

Preparation of solutions, buffers and dyes, and assistance in maintaining inventory of reagents.

Microtomy and staining (routines and special) of paraffin embedded tissues and embedding.

Specimen processing for paraffin plastic or snap freezing.

Logging, record keeping and filing of specimens with orderly filing of slides, blocks, reports, etc.

Any other duties as may be assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, TRAINING & SKILLS

 

Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.

EXPERIENCE

 

Two years of related experience. An equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience may be substituted for the requirements noted.
