Recent Graduate Internships

2014

Thomas Skaggs, World Affairs Council of Kentucky and Southern Indiana, spring semester.  Conducted oral histories with families who have hosted international visitors for the World Affairs Council. Digitized oral histories as audio files and incorporated them into the Council’s website as to commemorate the organization's 30th anniversary.

2013

Matt Holdzkom, Collections Department of the Kentucky Science Center, fall semester. Researched the origins of the John B. Hundley circus collection, including Hundley’s background and how the Kentucky Science Center acquired the collection. Assisted with curating, installing, and removing displays and documentation of the mummy collection.

Ellis Cassity, Farmington Historic Plantation, fall semester. Led visitor tours. Researched the history of hemp production in Kentucky and incorporated research into the Farmington tour manual.

Jessica Bunk, Riverside, the Farnsley-Moreman Landing, fall semester. Researched involvement of Moreman family in Bethany United Methodist Church.

Larry Johnson, Strategic Air and Space Museum, summer. Cataloged museum archives. Managed collections and maintained exhibits. Documented accessions and deaccessions and installed objects in Math Alive! exhibit.

Kimberly Kelley, Archives and Special Collections of the University of Louisville, spring semester.  Processed multiple collections, including the Frederick William Woosley papers and the Ann Hassett papers. Created a digital exhibit based on the Hassett papers.

Alex Covington, Special Collections of The Filson Historical Society, spring semester. Cataloged manuscripts, historical photographs, and artifacts.

2012

Savannah Darr, Preservation Louisville, fall semester. Assisted with fundraising and outreach. Prepared grant applications and proposals for corporate sponsorship. Researched potential funding sources. Recruited volunteers, maintained social media, and wrote articles for Preservation Louisville newsletter.

Zac Distel, Collections Department of the Frazier History Museum, fall semester. Cataloged and researched seven artifacts owned by General J. Fred Miles.

Andrew Clark, University Archives and Records Center of the University of Louisville, fall semester.  Processed the Lilialyce Akers papers. Developed organizational scheme for collection and prepared a finding aid.

Nicole Cissell, Education Department of the Kentucky Historical Society, spring semester.  Organized National History Day for the 3rd District of Kentucky. Designed and developed materials for educators and elementary- and middle school staff. Also developed interpretive materials for the Kentucky Historical Society museum.

Lena Gimbel, Special Collections of the Filson Historical Society, fall 2011 and spring 2012.  Cataloged architectural drawings and plans in the D. X. Murphy & Brothers architectural collection.  Research segregated and examples of architecture that incorporated social segregation in nineteenth-century Louisville.

2011

Amber G. Duke, Oral History Center of the University of Louisville, summer semester. Processed and digitized oral histories in the African American Oral History Collection. Developed website to make audio files of oral histories widely available. Proofread transcripts and prepared interview summaries. Conducted, transcribed, and indexed oral histories with members of the Kentucky Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression.

Marcy R. Werner, Kentucky Oral History Commission of the Kentucky Historical Society, spring semester. Digitized oral histories, conducted research in oral history collections in support of curatorial projects, and cataloged collections.

2010

Kate Sowada, Special Collections Department of the Kentucky Historical Society, summer and fall semesters. Cataloged various collections, including nineteenth and twentieth century photographs in the Ronald Morgan Postcard Collection and glass plate negatives of the Wolf, Gretter, Cusick, Hill Studio Collection. Digitized, inventoried, and summarized content of oral histories associated with the Ephraim McDowell House Museum. Conducted interviews with veterans for the Military Oral History Project.

Patricia Rowell-Johnson, Riverside, the Farnsley-Moreman Landing, fall semester. Inventoried and photographed furnishings and updated information in Past Perfect museum software. Assisted with day-to-day operations and coordination of special events.

Jennifer Oladipo, Louisville historical filmmaker Morgan Atkinson, fall semester. Developed plans for documentary film on the Western Branch Library. Prepared preview of project. Conducted research for documentaries on John Howard Griffin and Harlan Hubbard.

Tiffany Caesar, Locust Grove, fall semester. Researched slave life at Locust Grove in preparation for new slave dwelling exhibit. Prepared script for living history presentations on slavery and interpretive guidance on slave dwelling exhibit.
