From Brown to Meredith
A description of the project
"From Brown to Meredith" will explore the process of desegregation in Louisville with an emphasis on pivotal movements of contention within the the community over how to promote equality and diversity in the schools. It will employ a combination of oral history, other first-person testimony and contemporary documents, and interpretive essays to illuminate the diverse perspectives of people engaged in these debates, including not only activists and civic leaders but also students, teachers and school administrators. Ultimately, this book seeks to dislodge the discussion of school desegregation from the narrative if resistance and defeat by highlighting the voices of people working for and experiencing change within the schools. In doing so it will posit a counter-narrative in which school desegregation is part of a larger and ongoing movement for social justice and racial equality.
