PLAN Professional Development

The PLAN is a framework for understanding and addressing the professional development needs of graduate students. Run by the Graduate School, PLAN helps students take charge of their own learning and development by offering opportunities and resources related to Professional Development, Life Skills, Academic Development, and Networking skills. PLAN is designed to help students in getting started, moving on through their program, and moving beyond graduate school.

    Overview

Diagram showing all of the phases of PLAN Development

    Workshops and Events

PLAN supports your professional development by offering interdisciplinary workshops and events that address discrete topics of interest for graduate students. The workshops are typically 1-2 hours of discussion and interaction, facilitated by expert faculty and graduate students. Other special events include panels, invited speakers, and social and networking events.

    Academies

PLAN includes several Academies, which are threaded sets of workshops that run either a semester or a year long. Unlike workshops, Academies require students to apply for acceptance once a year. More information about the design, content, and application process for each Academy can be found at the links below.

    Mentoring

Mentorship is the flagship pedagogy of graduate education, and research shows that graduate students with strong mentoring relationships are more prepared, and often more successful in their career searches. The MentorCenter is designed to help faculty and students make the most of these essential relationships. Browse through the resources and frequently-asked questions, view videos and guides to faculty or peer mentoring, or request personalized mentoring advice through the MentorConnect portal.

    Resources

We have collected materials from many PLAN workshops and from across the web to provide as additional resources for you. This is a working document, so check back periodically as we continue to grow our collection.

Note: Please be respectful of the presenter by always giving credit when using any part of their workshop materials. Also understand that the materials included here are partial and out-of-context, and therefore do not represent or replace the full content of any PLAN session.
