Winter Welcome is UofL’s way to welcome all new, transfer and returning students to campus for the start of the spring semester.
Like Welcome Week in August, you can look to Winter Welcome to find a wide variety of opportunities to get connected on campus

This event will bring freshmen together with seniors and encourage them to swap their thoughts and experiences when it comes to choosing a major. Freshmen often feel overwhelmed by the task of picking a major, and seniors can provide them with a little bit of reassurance and guidance. 

January 13 (4 - 4:45 pm): First-generation Student Welcome & Panel
As a first gen student you have what it takes to succeed, but sometimes financial, family, academic or work pressures can make the first gen student experience particularly challenging. Hear from first-gen current students and UofL first-gen staff on their experiences and advice. One lucky participant will win their choice of a JBL Flip 4 Waterproof Bluetooth Speaker OR a Bear Butt Hammock with Straps and a wireless speaker. Join us via ZOOM.

January 14 (12:30 - 1:30 p.m.) Peer Mentor Programs Applicant Info Session
Are you interested in guiding first-year students as they adjust to college and UofL? You can gain valuable experience mentoring, teaching, serving as a role model and more. Multiple mentoring programs are hiring students from all academic units to serve as mentors for UofL’s new freshmen. Learn more about the various programs you can apply to be a part of and ask any questions you have. Programs covered will be A&S Peer Advisors, Compas, CONECT, Student Orientation Staff, and Student Success Ambassadors. Applications open on January 15. January 14 (6:00 - 7:00 p.m.): Disney Escape Room 
Put your Disney knowledge, logic and observation skills to the test and join us as we try to escape a virtual Disney-themed room! Come as an individual player or a team of up to 5 participants. Learn about campus traditions, resources, and locate key offices on campus with an interactive scavenger hunt! Download the Goosechase App:https://www.goosechase.com, search for "UofL Winter Welcome Scavenger Hunt," and enter the password "UOFL" to play! Winner will be announced the first week of February.

January 15 (All Day): Peer Mentor Applications are LIVE
Learn about leadership opportunities on campus and sign up to be a peer mentor to work with first year students! Learn more about the various programs you can apply to be a part of. Additional details also available on Handshake under "UofL Peer Mentor Programs."

January 15 (12:00 - 1:00 p.m.): Maple Tapping Workshop
Join us in UofL's sustainable Garden Commons to learn about the process of tapping maple trees and making maple syrup. Our workshop leader, Dave Barker, has been tapping trees and making his own syrup in Louisville for years. He will give a brief, hands-on workshop on the process and then attendees will get to work with him as we install taps on our own maple trees around campus. Participants will have the opportunity to sign-up to volunteer to empty buckets as they fill throughout the coming weeks. Please dress warmly so we can work outside! Masks and practice physical distancing will be required. In-person event with live streaming on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/gardencommons. 

January 15 (12:00 - 1:00 p.m.): Garden Commons Spring Workdays
Every Friday, 12pm-1pm. All are welcome at our weekly group workdays in UofL's organic Garden Commons in its new location at the southwest corner of Strickler Hall. Join us to learn (by doing) how to grow hyper-local, super-delicious vegetables, herbs, and fruits! Anyone can work in the garden any time, but we'll gather together every Friday at noon throughout the spring to harvest, weed, water, and plant. No prior experience necessary. Wear a mask and practice physical distancing. The Garden Commons is open to participation any time from students, staff, faculty, and community members. Everyone who comes is welcome to share in the harvest! In-person ONLY event.

January 17 (12:00 - 1:00 p.m.): UofL Community Composting Volunteer Day
Every Sunday, Noon-2pm, 250 E. Bloom St. (one block north of Cardinal Blvd. between Brook & Floyd Streets) Come help us turn “trash” into treasure as we manage UofL’s volunteer-powered community composting operation. Dress to get dirty. Tools provided. All participants are welcome to haul back home some rich UofL compost for their own gardening projects in whatever containers/vehicles they bring. This is a weekly service opportunity throughout the year.In-person ONLY event.

January 18 (All Day): MLK Jr. Virtual Celebration
This celebration of Martin Luther King features Hannah Drake, “Lift Every Voice Award” winner Shameka Parrish-Wright, and performances by winners of the MLK Artist contest. In lieu of hosting an in-person event, the Office of Student Involvement is excited to partner with the Student Organization Advisory Board (SOAB) to host a Spring Virtual RSO Fair. Students that are interested in getting involved with an organization can browse through and talk one on one with student leaders through virtual conferencing software for more information! January 29 (7:00 p.m.): International Fashion Show
Join the UofL Student Activities Board for the 19th Annual International Fashion Show.  The International Fashion Show is a stunning display of fashion from local vendors that celebrates the various cultures within the UofL community through fashion, songs, poetry, and dance. This event will stream virtually on the Student Activities Board Facebook page.
