Filing the 2012-2013 FAFSA

If you have not already done so, now is the time to complete your 2012-2013 FAFSA online. Since this year’s tax deadline has passed, you should have everything you need to apply for federal aid.
Be sure to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool to automatically import your tax information onto your FAFSA. It makes filing the FAFSA a breeze!

I’ve applied for financial aid for next year, now what?
The Student Financial Aid Office will be creating award packages for continuing students by June 1. Until then, we may contact you for additional information that will complete your financial aid file. Regularly check your To Do List available by logging into ULink for important messages and forms. Be sure to watch your CardMail email account.
If you haven’t done so already, please log in to to transfer your (and your parent's if applicable) 2011 IRS income tax information into your FAFSA using the IRS Data Retrieval so that we may have the most accurate information on file for you. More information is available at our website:

Verification – It’s Changed!

If you are selected for a process called verification, you will be notified by email with instructions for completing the process.  If you have completed verification in the past, then you may feel familiar with the process, but it has changed significantly!
This year the federal government introduced some new concepts:   1) IRS Data Retrieval and 2) IRS Tax Return Transcript.  When completing verification forms you (or your parents) will not be required to submit a copy of tax documents if you successfully completed the IRS Data Retrieval process.  However, if you did not (or were in ineligible to) complete the IRS Data Retrieval process, you will be requested to attach a copy of your IRS Tax Return Transcript to your verification forms.  This is new!
Our office can no longer accept the tax filer’s copy of their federal income tax returns.
Plan now and act soon … either complete the IRS Data Retrieval process or request a copy of your tax return transcript.  In addition, if you paid child support or received food stamps, you may be required to provide information you have not had to provide in the past.  Follow the instructions on your verification form carefully.  For more information:

Summer 2012 Financial Aid

The UofL application for summer 2012 federal financial aid is available to submit via ULink. You must have a complete 2011-2012 financial aid file to apply, which includes a 2011-2012 FAFSA and all requested documentation.
Do not apply on ULink until you have finalized your summer enrollment.  If you submit the online summer application before you finalize your summer enrollment, your awards may be delayed and may have to be adjusted.
During summer, federal financial assistance is available to eligible applicants who have remaining Pell Grant, TEACH Grant, and/or Stafford Loan eligibility.  Undergraduate students can also apply for the Parent PLUS Loan, and graduate and law students can apply for the Graduate/Professional PLUS Loan. In addition to submitting the ULink summer aid application, students interested in a PLUS Loan must submit a request form available on our website.

Scholarship Opportunities

The Student Financial Aid Office keeps our website updated on an ongoing basis with information about current scholarship opportunities.  You may view the scholarship page at
On this website, be sure to check the Outside Scholarships section. From there, you can link to the outside scholarship web page to view all outside scholarships about which the Student Financial Aid Office has been notified. We encourage students to review this list periodically throughout the year; it is updated frequently with new information.
Under the heading of Departmental Scholarships/Assistantships/Fellowships, click on the "departmental awards" link to access current links to campus department and/or school websites where scholarships may be advertised.  We also recommend students check directly with the department and/or school in which they are studying to see if there are any scholarships available.
If you are aware you will be receiving a scholarship for the upcoming year, please report this information on our Report Other Aid Form at

Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) Reminder

It is a good time to familiarize yourself with our Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy. We review federal aid applicants annually and this year our SAP policy has changed!
Satisfactory Academic Progress is unique to financial aid and includes a minimum GPA requirement, the maximum time frame allowed to complete a degree, and pace – which compares total hours earned versus total hours attempted. We must monitor students’ academic progress for continued federal and state aid eligibility. A more-detailed explanation of SAP can be found at
If you need academic assistance, please consult your academic advisor and/or the REACH Office.
If you have any concerns about SAP, please contact the Student Financial Aid Office.
