How Can I Prove My Identity and Right to Work in the U.S.?
It's easy! Sometime during your first three days of work, you need to fill out the employee portion of Form I-9, Section 1. Your employer has to fill out the rest of the form. This is where you're going to need your documentation. Lists A, B, and C on Form I-9 outline which documents you need to prove that you're legally allowed to work in this country. Show your employer either one document from List A, or one document from List B as well as one document from List C. Many employees use their social security card together with their driver's license to prove their right to work.
KNOW YOUR RIGHTS--Your employer can legally photocopy and file the documents you use to prove your identity and right to work. Your employer cannot tell you which specific documents to bring in. You get to choose which document or combination of documents from the lists on Form I-9 you want to use, and your employer has to accept these as proof.
