MA in English: Application Instructions

Application Deadlines

Applications must be complete by the deadline listed below. A complete application includes 2 letters of reference, a critical writing sample, GRE general test scores, and official transcripts. 

January 5 - MA with GTAship, admission for fall semester only

April 15 - MA without GTAship, summer admission 

July 15 - MA without GTAship, fall admission

December 1 - MA without GTAship, spring admission

  1. Application for graduate admissions (including fee). Online application: Apply Now. 
  2. Official transcripts of all undergraduate work and any post graduate work. (Official transcripts must be sent directly to the admissions office from the previous institution. For electronic transcripts, please send to gradadm@louisville.edu) All documents not in English must have a verbatim notarized English translation. 
  3. Graduate Record Examination (GRE), general test scores. (within the last 5 years)
  4. Two academic letters of recommendation. Letters from employers and personal references are not acceptable. The reference should speak to the prospective student's ability to succeed at graduate studies. Discursive letters must be attached to the PDF form.
  5. Critical writing sample of at least 10 pages (demonstrates the prospective student's investigative and expository skills). Students who plan to focus on creative writing should send a creative writing sample in addition to the critical sample. 

All applicants for whom English is a second language must submit official TOEFL scores of 213 or higher on the computer based test, 550 or higher on the paper based test or 79 or higher on the internet-based test. English proficiency can also be met by submitting official IELTS scores of at least 6.5 overall band score from the academic module exam. Applicants holding a bachelor's or advanced degree from an accredited U.S. institution may be exempt from this requirement. 

GTA Application (fall admission only, due January 5th)

The entire application for graduate study must be complete by January 5th to be considered for a GTAship. The GTA application should be sent directly to the department:
