The Colonel of Comics:
Zombies, Anti-Heroes and the Art of Tony Moore
Tony Moore was “raised by a wild pack of televisions” in the small town of Cynthiana, Ky. Moore spent his formative years on his grandfather’s tobacco farm dreaming of little else than growing up to be a comic book artist.
Graduating from Harrison Co High School in 1997, Tony went on to nearly complete his BFA in Drawing from the University of Louisville’s Hite Art Institute before abandoning his studies to pursue his dream.
Most known for his work on The Walking Dead, Moore also co-created the books The Exterminators and Fear Agent, and has since lent his hand to bombastic runs on Marvel’s Ghost Rider, Punisher, Venom, and Deadpool, and has drawn covers for countless others. He has been twice nominated for the comics industry’s prestigious Eisner Award.
Tony will have a conversation with University of Louisville’s Dr. Joe Turner. Joe was born into a family of Kentucky transplants. According to family lore, his great grandfather was involved in the infamous Turner-Howard feud in Harlan Co., Ky, which led his grandfather to resettle in Baltimore, MD. Two generations later, Joe earned a PhD at the University of Delaware before taking his job as an English professor with UofL.
Joe first became interested in comics in 5th grade, when the X-Men cartoon began airing on Saturday mornings. His full-fledged love for comics developed when he found Neil Gaiman’s Sandman a few years later. Now he regularly teaches courses on comics, where he gets to share his love for the medium. He is convinced that comics is one of the few remaining media in which innovation remains truly possible.
Join us for an evening exploring the pastoral landscapes and personal demons that have inspired and resurrected the mind of Colonel Tony Moore to bring life to today’s darkest comic heroes.
