letterhead jpg Sept. 21, 2009 Cindy Hess, 502-852-6171 Cindy.hess@louisville.edu Autism workshop to be held in Prestonsburg Program will explore new strategies for teaching students with autism LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Kentucky Autism Training Center at the University of Louisville is coming to Prestonsburg on Sept. 28-29 to conduct a workshop. The workshop is intended to help educators and direct service providers learn and implement new teaching strategies for students with autism. The two-day program will be held at Jenny Wiley State Park from 9 a.m. -5 p.m. Cost for the workshop is $125 and check-in is at 8:30 a.m. The first day will provide an introduction to the basic principles of applied behavior analysis and provide a logical framework for assessing problem behavior and suggest tips to make data collection and intervention less complicated in school settings. The second day will provide participants with knowledge related to evidenced-based practices for teaching students with autism. The presenters will build on the information presented the first day as they teach participants the basic components of instruction. Presenters at the workshop are Dr. Rich Mancil and Rob Pennington. Rich Mancil is the executive director of KATC and an assistant professor in the Department of Teaching and Learning. He holds a doctorate in special education from the University of Florida where he conducted research and taught courses. Mancil's research focuses on children with autism spectrum disorders and their families; he is particularly interested in social communicative behaviors. Robert Pennington is the assistant director of training at the Kentucky Autism Training Center (KATC) and an instructor in the department of special education. He is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Kentucky. He has served as a classroom teacher and district technical assistance provider, and piloted Jefferson County Public Schools’ first autism inclusion model.
