letterhead jpg Oct. 8, 2009 Cindy Hess, 502-852-6171 Cindy.hess@louisville.edu Autism workshop to be held in Jamestown Program will explore new strategies for teaching students with autism LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Kentucky Autism Training Center at the University of Louisville is coming to Jamestown, Oct. 19 – 20 to conduct a workshop. The workshop is intended to help educators and direct service providers learn and implement new strategies for teaching students with autism. The two-day program will be held at Lake Cumberland State Park from 9 a.m. -5 p.m. Cost for the workshop is $125 and check-in is at 8:30 a.m. The first day will provide an introduction to the basic principles of applied behavior analysis (ABA) and provide a logical framework for assessing problem behavior and suggest tips to make data collection and intervention less complicated in school settings. The second day will provide participants with knowledge related to evidenced-based practices for teaching students with autism. The presenters will build on the information presented in Day 1 as they teach participants the basic components of instruction and their application across broad contexts and skills. Presenters at the workshop are Emily Kirkham and Katie Carnazzo. Emily Kirkham graduated from the University of Louisville with a Bachelors degree in Sociology. She has worked with children with autism for over 6 years by working on collaborative teams to develop and implement behavior, communication, social and toileting programs in diverse settings. In her current role at the KATC, she provides direct training and technical assistance to education staff, social and community personnel, counselors, job coaches and families. Katie Carnazzo, M.A. graduated from the University of Kansas with a Masters degree in Human Development and Behavior Analysis. She has worked with children with autism for approximately 15 years in various roles. Ms. Carnazzo did her graduate work at Juniper Gardens Children's Project in Kansas City, KS, designing and implementing programs, which promoted successful integration of children with autism into regular, age-appropriate classrooms.
