The University of Louisville is dedicated to helping all Kentuckians, whether they live in Louisville, Appalachia or the Pennyrile. The university is actively involved in every single one of the state’s 120 counties. This map showcases just some of UofL’s areas of activity. 12 ¦ UofL Magazine ¦ www.louisville.edu Dataseam supplies participating school districts with new computers. After school hours, the computers are used by UofL scientists for cancer research. Dataseam also provides scholarships for students in coal- producing counties that participate in Dataseam. UofL has many educational outreach programs including the Kentucky Autism Training Center, offering information and technical assistance to families and service providers for those with autism, and ACCLAIM, a partnership that builds the math skills of teachers in Appalachia. UofL’s many medical partnerships include AHEC, created to improve the recruitment, distribution and retention of health-care professionals in medically underserved areas; the Kentucky Cancer Program, which identifies cancer problems and mobilizes communities into action; and Passport, a Medicaid- managed care plan serving the state’s Medicaid and KCHIP populations. We also have medical students on rotation in rural areas statewide. The Children’s Free Dental Clinic, an AHEC program, assists needy kids by providing dental exams, oral health-care education and restoration services. Restoring waterways and monitoring the impact of pollutants on our air and plantlife are just some of the “green” activities UofL is involved in statewide. Several of our environmental projects are designed to save energy. They include KEEPS, which helps school districts reduce energy consumption and operating expenses. KEEPS is part of our Kentucky Pollution Prevention Center, which itself conducts energy audits for businesses statewide. Assisting the elderly with their wills and providing legal clinics for Hispanics are ways in which students and faculty in UofL’s law school help Kentuckians. UofL’s engineering school assists companies in Fayette and Jefferson counties with their rapid prototyping needs, as they create new products for the market. In Jefferson County our business college helps area companies operate more efficiently, grow new business and make wise distribution choices. WINTER 2008 ¦ UofL Magazine ¦ 13
