September 2: “Black or White?”

Quoting from the song by the legendary King of Pop, Michael Jackson, this discussion will focus on the theory that when Black people use proper grammar, live in a certain area or are well-educated, they are trying to “act White.” The National Research on Economic Theory website provides information that states “Black and Hispanic students who earn high grades face social costs in terms of their popularity." http://www.nber.org/digest/jan06/w11334.html. Do dialect, intellect or geographic residence affect ethnic identity? Are Black people missing out on opportunities because of having to prove their Blackness? On September 2nd, “Let’s Talk” about this interesting and timely topic.
