Services for Students with Temporary Medical Conditions

The Disability Resource Center (DRC) provides limited services to students with temporary medical conditions, such as injuries, surgeries, etc. Depending on the impact of the condition, other campus offices such as the Dean of Students Office or University Parking & Transportation Services may be appropriate resources as well. Faculty are encouraged to refer students with temporary medical conditions to the appropriate resource for support, and students are advised to communicate with their faculty about these situations. Students with temporary medical conditions who need assistance from the DRC should contact us to request assistance. Medical documentation of the condition and anticipated duration of impairment may be required by the DRC, Dean of Students Office, or University Parking & Transportation Services in order to receive assistance.

Support available through the Disability Resource Center:

  • Note Taking - Students with temporary medical conditions that impact writing may request assistance with note taking in the classroom. If a supplemental note taker is already identified in a specific class, the DRC may be able to connect the student with the existing note taker. If a supplemental note taker is not identified in a specific class, the DRC can support the student in their efforts to identify a peer to share notes.
  • Testing Accommodations - The DRC can provide assistance to students with temporary medical conditions who are unable to write exam responses or may need additional time to write responses. Faculty have the option of working out the exam arrangements directly with the student, or DRC can administer and assist the student by providing additional time, assistive technology, and/or a scribe. If using a scribe, the DRC will inform the faculty that some flexibility may be needed regarding precise times that exams can be scheduled at the DRC, as this will depend on availability of a scribe. Depending on the nature of the subject, assistance from the academic department may be necessary to identify a qualified scribe for the exam.
  • Assistive Technology - Students who need assistance with typing written assignments outside of class may use voice recognition software. This software is available to all students through the DRC website, so it is not required that students provide documentation or meet with the DRC to implement this software outside of class. The DRC does not provide students with permanent disabilities or temporary medical conditions with out of class assistance with homework or written assignments.

Support available through the Dean of Students Office:

  • Absence Notification – The Dean of Students Office can facilitate the absence notification process for students. Whether flexibility with attendance is provided is at the discretion of the instructor.
  • Course Incomplete - Students unable to complete course work because of conditions beyond their control may request an incomplete in a course, so that the work can be completed after the end of the semester. The Dean of Students Office can help the student contact their professor and request an incomplete in accordance with University policy. It is the instructor’s decision whether to offer an incomplete, and they may do so only if the following conditions are met:
    • The majority of the course work was completed prior to the end of the semester;
    • The student is in good standing to pass the course upon successful completion of the remaining work;
    • The final portion of the course work could not be completed for reasons beyond the student’s control.
  • Schedule Changes – If students are not able to attend a course due to a temporary medical condition, the Dean of Students Office may be able to assist the student in identifying another section of the course to which the student could switch (for example, a distance education section). Any changes to a student’s schedule will need to be approved by the professor and the academic unit and will depend on the course offerings, availability, instructors on record, etc.
  • Emergency Fund – Students who need financial support due to a temporary medical condition may request assistance through the Student Emergency Fund. The Emergency Fund is not for routine expenses, but rather a catastrophic and unexpected situation that jeopardizes their enrollment. Expenses that may be covered include medical expenses, safety needs, or living expenses. Expenses generally not covered include tuition and fees, non-essential utilities, tickets or fines, foreseeable and non-emergency expenses, and expenditures resulting from poor financial management.
  • Pregnancy Accommodations – The Dean of Students Office can provide support to students who need accommodations due to pregnancy, childbirth, or other related conditions in accordance with Title IX and the UofL Pregnancy Policy.
  • Compassionate Withdrawal – Students experiencing extenuating circumstances beyond their control that impact their ability to complete courses and perform academically may utilize the compassionate withdrawal process.

Support available through University Parking & Transportation Services:

  • Campus Shuttle - Students with temporary medical conditions that impact their mobility may consider using the campus shuttle to move around the perimeter of campus. Personalized transportation is not available to students with permanent disabilities or those with temporary medical conditions. The DRC can provide referral information for renting a motorized mobility device, such as a scooter or wheelchair, if needed.
  • Accessible Parking - Students with temporary medical conditions that impact their mobility can request a temporary accessible parking permit.
