Services for Students Who Are Blind / Visually Impaired
Disability Resource Center coordinates services for blind and visually impaired students at the University of Louisville. Services include:
- Assess each student's support needs on a case by case basis to determine eligibility for services and to determine accommodations.
- Meet with each visually impaired student at least once a semester to determine appropriate support services.
- Provide information and training to students who are blind or visually impaired about campus, community, state, and national resources to promote independence.
- Assist students in developing self-empowerment, self-esteem, and independence skills.
- Coordinate support services for students who are blind or visually impaired. Including coordination of exam accommodation service, note taking assistance, brailing, classroom assistance, mobility instruction, and tutoring.
- Assist students in obtaining readers for academic materials that are not in accessible format.
- Assist in locating braille material for students who are blind and read braille.
- Assist in finding an in-class assistant for classes where an assistant is deemed necessary.
- Assist students in obtaining mobility instruction on the University of Louisville campus prior to the beginning of each semester.
- Assist students in accessing tutoring through existing University resources; assist students in locating supplemental tutoring, in limited cases, in collaboration with the Department for the Blind.
- Adaptive Equipment Lab provides auxiliary aids and adaptive equipment such as tape recorders, CCTV print enlargers, computer screen magnification software and synthetic speech, and optical character recognition scanner.
- Interface with faculty regarding student academic support needs, and provide information regarding classroom accommodations.
- Assist faculty in providing appropriate classroom accommodations.
