World-renowned dental materials researcher, instructor joins UofL School of Dentistry faculty

Dr. Grace De Souza

This month, the University of Louisville School of Dentistry welcomed Grace De Souza DDS, MSc, PhD, FADM, to its faculty. Dr. De Souza’s research has been published worldwide in publications including Dental Materials, Journal of Biomedical Materials Research, and Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry. She also authored a chapter in the textbook, Nanotechnology in Endodontics.

After completing dental school and advanced studies in restorative dentistry, Dr. De Souza served as a visiting researcher in biomaterials at the New York University College of Dentistry. She then completed a PhD and a post-doctorate in biomaterials in Brazil. She served as a faculty at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Toronto from 2011 to 2021.

At the UofL School of Dentistry, Dr. De Souza will continue her research on dental materials. In particular, she will investigate subjects such as:

  • Zirconia – mechanical properties, crystalline stability and bond strength
  • Ionizing irradiation and tooth structure
  • Laboratorial methods to simulate in vivo aging of dental materials

She will also teach DMD students and postgraduate residents. Dr. De Souza describes her teaching style as “willing and available to listen,” adding that “kindness and goodwill go a long way.”
