For the 26th consecutive year, the UofL School of Dentistry offered free head and neck assessments in partnership with the Kentucky Cancer Program and Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield.

Kentucky has a high incidence of oral disease, which includes tooth decay, gum disease and oral cancer, and Dr. Lee Mayer, associate professor and director of community dental health at the School of Dentistry, says it is important to get regular checkups by a dental health professional for early detection and treatment.

Students and faculty screened 87 adults over five days, and provided the 2000th screening on Aug. 25 for the 26-year period.

Dr. Mayer extended thanks to the 27 D4 student screeners including Laura Miller, Monica Lee, Jeff Drake, and Meredith Ginet who served as site-managers as well as the school’s staff and faculty volunteers: Susan Rissman, Beth Roberts, Dr. John Firriolo, Dr. Lawrence Gettleman, and Dr. P. Gay Baughman.
