UofL dental students to host a 5K walk-run and shoe drive to benefit local and international children
University of Louisville School of Dentistry students invite the community to take part in the 3rd annual Beat the Pumpkin 5K Walk/Run Oct. 22 at Cherokee Park. Registration begins at 8:45 a.m., and the race starts at 9:30 a.m at Hogan’s Fountain. All proceeds will benefit local children of the working poor who need help paying for dental treatment.
The University of Louisville Pediatric Dentistry Program has offered subsidized dental care to underprivileged children for many years, with the help of donations. In an effort to aid the pediatric program in serving the community, multiple University of Louisville student dental organizations have collaborated to organize the annual walk/run.
The first 100 people to register will receive a T-shirt and race pack. There will be prizes for best costume - pets included, and Trick-or-Treating and games for the whole family.
The students are also partnering with Soles4Souls to collect 'gently worn' shoes for those in need. The organization distributes shoes to people living in extreme poverty and recovering from natural disasters. The shoe charity provides one pair of shoes to a person in need every 7 seconds. Since 2005, Soles4Souls has distributed more than 13 million pairs of shoes to people in over 127 countries, including Kenya, Thailand, Nepal and the United States.
Shoes will be collected in the front lobby of the dental school through Friday, Oct. 21. All types and sizes are accepted. Please either rubber band the pairs together or tie the laces together before placing them in the box. Every person who donates a pair of shoes this year can reduce their Beat the Pumpkin 5K registration fee from $20 to $16. Participants can visit www.beatthepumpkin.org to print and mail in a registration. Or visit www.active.com and search keyword ‘Beat The Pumpkin’ to pay online.
