Smile Kentucky! is in the national spotlight for children’s oral health programs

Smile Kentucky! is in the national spotlight for children’s oral health programs

Community partnership will provide up to 300 children with free dental treatment on Friday, February 1

 

 WHAT: The American Dental Association (ADA) highlights the success of Smile Kentucky!, a community partnership that provides dental education, screenings and treatment to children in Louisville and surroundings counties.  Up to 300 children will receive free, comprehensive treatment on February 1 at the UofL School of Dentistry.  The ADA selected Smile Kentucky! as its national spotlight for the 2013 Give Kids a Smile program.

WHO: UofL President Dr. James Ramsey, ADA President Dr. Robert Faiella and State Dental Director, Dr. Julie McKee will talk about the uniqueness of Smile Kentucky! and efforts to address the severity of oral health in Kentucky.

WHEN/WHERE: 9am Friday, February 1, UofL School of Dentistry, 501 South Preston Street.

**Media event in the 2nd floor clinic; enter through the Dental School’s new entrance located on the east side of the building. Dental school staff will be in place to direct you to the clinic.**

Children from 23 schools will receive free treatment on February 1. Students begin arriving at the UofL Dental School at 8:30am.  Following the remarks at 9am, media can go through the dental clinics for photos/video and interviews.  The treatment continues at the school through 2pm.

ABOUT: February 1 is the ADA’s national treatment day, Give Kids a Smile.  The Louisville-based program, Smile Kentucky! began in 2002 as a community partnership to provide free dental education and dental screenings at school and free, comprehensive treatment to underserved children.  Smile Kentucky! includes over 150 partners and since 2002 has provided over $1 million dollars of free dentistry.  The education program is now part of a statewide effort.
