Overview

Mission Statement:

The Department of  General  Dentistry and Oral Medicine  is committed to supporting the mission of the University and the School of Dentistry through teaching, research, service, and patient care.  Our primary mission is to provide high quality didactic, pre-clinical, and clinical instruction that is contemporary and evidence-based.

Goal:

To provide to students  the educational experience that will result in a graduate who is competent  for entry-level generalist practice in the department’s areas of responsibility.

Objectives:

  • The graduate will be competent in critical thinking skills in the comprehensive care of patients.
  • The graduate will be competent in providing quality dental  care to a diverse population of patients in a multicultural work setting.
  • The graduate will be competent in demonstrating professional behaviors consistent with the legal and ethical expectations of the profession and the public.
  • The graduate will be competent in diagnosing and managing oral diseases that are encountered in clinical dentistry.
  • The graduate will be competent in the evaluation and management of medically complex/compromised patients in order to ensure their safe dental treatment.
  • The graduate will be competent in formulating treatment plans with emphasis on the collation of all pertinent facts and provision of choices for alternative treatment plans.
  • The graduate will be competent in selecting and using the appropriate materials to restore the individual tooth to acceptable form, function, and esthetics while promoting oral health.
  • The graduate will be competent in restoring the gnathostomatic system to acceptable form, function, and esthetics through the application of fundamental, sound principles of  prosthodontics.
  • The graduate will be competent in applying business and economic concepts to dental practice management decisions.
