Training for all users of radioactive material is mandatory.
Classroom Training
Radiation Safety Training is required prior to any personnel working with or around radioactive materials. The radiation safety orientation training is conducted monthly on the second Thursday of each month from 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM. Classes are usually held in the Baxter I Basement Auditorium. Please check the DEHS Calendar for course times and locations.
Annual training is required after orientation training. The annual training is provided online at Radiation Safety Refresher Training for Lab Personnel.
Lab-Specific Training
In addition to classroom training, the Authorized User is responsible for assuring that his/her radiation workers have received adequate instruction in radiation safety principles applicable to specific practices of that particular laboratory. All personnel working with radioactive materials shall be thoroughly instructed in safe handling methods and radiation safety principles. The laboratory supervisor shall instruct employees in specific procedures and protocols applicable to the specific operations employed in the laboratory. Instructions should continue with on-the-job-training. It should be noted that many handling and radiation safety procedures pertain to circumstances in a particular lab or institution; therefore, it may not be assumed that instruction has necessarily been adequately provided by prior occupational training, board certification, etc.
